CANTI E MANOSCRITTI DEL MEDIOEVO MOZARABICO

Quando nel 711 gli Arabi giunsero in Spagna, dove costituirono quel leggendario regno di cui percepiamo ancora il fascino facendo un giro tra Cordova e Granada, si trovarono di fronte un popolo dimenticato di origine germanica, ormai saldamente cristianizzato e guidato dalla saggezza dei vescovi locali.
Sono i Visigoti, che già dal VI secolo avevano organizzato un rito e un repertorio di canto religioso personale, autonomo rispetto ai canti e alla liturgia della chiesa di Roma.
Arabi e Visigoti convivono per secoli, ora in modo pacifico ora conflittuale, ma in una profonda mescolanza delle due culture in quella che definiamo oggi cultura mozarabica. E così la particolare liturgia dei visigoti si tramanda nei secoli arabi così come il loro canto sacro, grazie alla cura degli scriptoria monastici che trascrivono le melodie nei neumi, la notazione musicale utilizzata prima dell’introduzione del nostro pentagramma.
Questo straordinario repertorio sfuma col tempo nel canonico canto gregoriano, quando il Papato in accordo con i Carolingi uniformerà il culto cristiano soffocando le sue specificità locali, come il rito mozarabico e con esso il suo canto. Ma nei dintorni di Toledo, l’antica capitale visigota, si possono ancora ascoltare i frammenti di queste antiche melodie spagnole.

Agli scriptoria dei monasteri spagnoli dobbiamo poi altre meravigliose testimonianze della cultura mozarabica: nei manoscritti miniati dei secoli di dominazione araba, i linguaggi cristiani e moreschi si fondono e danno vita a pagine finemente decorate che paiono tappeti arabeschi, a figure stilizzate, sottili e espressive. Queste caratteristiche possiamo trovarle nei “manoscritti del Beatus”, realizzati su per giù nel tardo XI secolo. Le immagini, che illustrano temi de l’Apocalisse, ci sorprendono per i colori vibranti e vivaci, drammatici come il testo che accompagnano. Le figure cariche di tensione e l’atmosfera cruenta ci raccontano del fermento spirituale che in quegli anni accompagnava la Reconquista, ma vanno ben al di là dei secoli medioevali e diventano un simbolo dell’intera cultura spagnola, tanto che le ritornano nel tempo, nel dolore delle figure del Guernica di Picasso.
